In NYC in order to dispose of your large bulk items such as mattresses, microwaves, televisions, sofas, EZ chairs, wood tables, etc.. you need to follow NYC regulations.

Most of your items can be picked up from the curb with the rest of your recyclables, but read and follow the guidelines below to learn more.

Carpet / Rug - Old carpets and rugs must be free of all nails or staples, and securely tied in bales no more than 2 feet high and 4 feet long. Mattresses and Box Springs - To combat Bed Bugs, any person disposing of mattresses or box springs for DSNY collection must fully enclose these items within a sealed plastic bag.

Sanitation will collect up to six items from one address. Items must be placed on curbside between 5pm (4pm on Fridays from October to April) and midnight the night before your regular garbage collection day.

In order to find out the collection date log on to: http://gis.nyc.gov/gisapp/sn/sanitation.jsp

The Department of Sanitation will collect up to 6 bulky items from one address so make sure not to put it all in once. You are not allowed to discard appliances with CFC gas or Freon such as refrigerators – yes even the small ones, freezers, air conditioners and even some dehumidifiers. In order to dispose of those you must call 311 and set up an appointment for the sanitation department to pick it up.
